  • How far is it from family / friends / local amenities?
  • Is transport easy (public, parking)?

Availability & Fees

  • Is there a bed available?
  • What are the entry/accommodation costs?
  • What are the ongoing fees (daily, higher every day living)?
  • What is included vs what costs extra?

Care & Services

  • Level of care offered (dementia, nursing, respite etc.)
  • Staff qualifications & training levels
  • Is there 24-hour nursing coverage?
  • What allied health / therapy / specialist services are available?

Living & Environment

  • Cleanliness, smell, maintenance of the building and grounds.
  • Private vs shared rooms; are rooms bright, natural light, ventilated?
  • Accessibility: ramps, wide doorways, grab rails, walk-in showers etc.
  • Comfort: temperature, lighting, noise levels.

Food & Daily Life

  • Menu variety & special dietary options (e.g. low salt, vegetarian, texture modified).
  • Are snacks, drinks, fluids available when needed?
  • Social / recreational activities: what kinds, how often?
  • Opportunities to leave the facility and visitors / pets policies.

Resident Rights & Communication

  • Written resident agreement showing rights & responsibilities.
  • How are care plans developed? Resident & family involvement?
  • Is there a mechanism for raising concerns or complaints?
  • Do staff treat residents with respect, addressing them by name?

Special Needs & Culture

  • Memory / dementia care support if required.
  • Cultural / language support, religious services.
  • Rooms for personal belongings, furniture, choice of roommate.
  • Is diversity welcomed and accommodated?

Trial Visit Impressions

  • Talk to current residents and their families.
  • How do staff seem (warm, attentive)?
  • Does the place “feel right” — safe, calm, welcoming?
  • Is documentation and service info (policies, charges etc.) given clearly and in writing?
